RIX UK is a leading applicator of a comprehensive range of intumescent paint products in the UK.

Intumescent specialist coatings represent a cutting-edge development in passive fire protection. They offer the advantage of quick application and provide a smooth, durable decorative finish for structural steel, cast iron, and wood. Depending on specific project requirements, intumescent paints are available in both water-based and solvent-based formulations.

These coatings can offer up to 120 minutes of fire protection for structural steel, effectively preventing structural failure. In the event of a fire, intumescent paint reacts by expanding 50 to 100 times its original thickness. Most intumescent paints contain chemicals that, when exposed to heat and fire, produce a foam-like substance on the surface. As this foam carbonizes, it transforms into a black char, insulating and safeguarding the integrity of the steel, cast iron, or wood surface. This char layer is a poor conductor of heat and significantly reduces the spread of fire.

Intumescent paint operates in a fire situation by transitioning from a painted finish to a chemical reaction that generates a carbonaceous char. This char layer can be more than 50 times the thickness of the applied paint.

Intumescent paints are easy to apply using a brush, roller, or spray method, and they offer a decorative and aesthetically pleasing finish. For higher fire ratings, additional thickness can be applied according to the required specifications and building codes.

RIX UK is pleased to provide guidance to clients on various intumescent products and their applications.
